## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AT APPROXIMATELY 10:45(L), ON 03/29/2022, EXTRA 300 N808YF STRUCK A LARGE BIRD AT APPROXIMATELY 400' - 600' AGL WHILE PRACTICING FOR AIRSHOW AT RICHARD B. RUSSELL AIRPORT (RMG), ROME, GEORGIA. THE PILOT DID NOT SEE THE BIRD UNTIL JUST BEFORE IMPACT AND WAS UNABLE TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID THE BIRD. THE BIRD STRUCK THE VERTICAL STABILIZER CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE. THE PILOT WAS ABLE TO LAND THE AIRPLANE SAFELY WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT FOLLOWING THE BIRD STRIKE. THE ONLY NOTABLE DAMAGE TO THE AIRPLANE WAS LIMITED TO THE VERTICAL STABILIZER AND RUDDER. THE PILOT WAS THE SOLE OCCUPANT OF THE AIRPLANE AND SUSTAINED NO INJURIES. PILOT STATED THAT HE WOULD REPORT THE BIRD STRIKE USING THE FAA'S WILDLIFE STRIKE WEBSITE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA22LA178](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA22LA178), Mar 29, 2022: Extra 300 (N808YF), Rome, GA, substantial damage. Probable cause: An inflight collision with a bird while conducting low level aerobatics.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
