## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON THE EVENING OF 05/07/2022, THE PIC NOTICED THE BATTERY WAS WEAK AND WAS UNABLE TO START THE ENGINE.

PIC RETURNED THE MORNING OF 05/08/2022 WITH AN AUTOMOTIVE BATTERY "POWER PACK", SOMETIMES CALLED A "JUMP STARTER", AND CONNECTED IT TO THE EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY PORT ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE FUSELAGE, WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF A VOLUNTEER GROUND CREW MEMBER.

THE ENGINE STARTED SOONER THAN THE PILOT EXPECTED HE WROTE IN HIS STATEMENT THAT THE ENGINE "NORMALLY TAKES 10-12 CRANKS" BUT STARTED "IN LESS THAN ONE TURN".

THIS SURPRISED THE PILOT AND HE WAS UNABLE TO TAKE PROPER CONTROL OF THE HAND OR TOE BRAKES BEFORE THE AIRCRAFT MOVED FORWARD ABOUT 40', TURNED ABOUT 30° TO THE RIGHT, AND STRUCK A MEDIUM SIZED TREE WITH A 1' HIGH WALL OF BRICKS AT ITS BASE.

IMMEDIATELY THE PILOT MOVED THE AIRCRAFT FROM ITS RESTING POSITION BACK TO A TIE DOWN/PARKING SPOT WITH THE HELP OF SOME PASSERBYS. THIS WAS AGAINST THE ADVICE OF THE "GATE ONE" FBO STAFF AT THE SCENE.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
