## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT STATED HE HAD DEPARTED A PRIVATE GRASS AIRSTRIP IN BRASSTOWN NC IN VMC CONDITIONS. DURING CRUISE FLIGHT THE PILOT THEN HEARD AN UNIDENTIFIABLE SOUND FROM THE ENGINE WITH AN ASSOCIATED VIBRATION. HE IMMEDIATELY TURNED BACK TOWARD AN OPEN FIELD AND PREPARED FOR AN OFF-AIRPORT LANDING. THE PILOT MADE A MAYDAY CALL ON 122.9 AND OPTED TO CONTINUE TO FLIGHT BACK TO HIS DEPATURE POINT BECAUSE THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING STRONG. AFTER NOTICING THE ENGINE WAS LOSING COOLANT ALONG WITH OIL AND COOLANT TEMPS RISING EXTREMELY HIGH THE PILOT CHOSE TO LAND ON AN UN-MOWED FIELD PERPENDICULAR TO THE AIRSTRIP BEFORE THE ENGINE QUIT. A HARD LANDING RESULTED IN A PROP STRIKE, NOSE GEAR COLLAPSE AND DAMAGE TO "HEAD RACK TUBE" AND THE WINDSCREEN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA22LA268](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA22LA268), May 9, 2022: Wingren Norman Escapade (N86RD), Brasstown, NC, substantial damage. Probable cause: The failure of the engine gearbox drive flange, which resulted in a nose gear collapse during the subsequent precautionary landing in tall grass.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
