## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MAY 16, 2022 AT APPROXIMATELY 1622 LOCAL TIME, N927AP, A TAYLORCRAFT F-109 ENGINE FAILED WHILE ON BASE LEG AT GOOSE BAY AIRPORT, ALASKA (Z40) DURING AN FAR PART 91 FLIGHT FOR THE PURPOSES OF FLIGHT INSTRUCTION. THE AIRCRAFT PIC, A CFI CONDUCTING TAILWHEEL PROFICIENCY FLIGHT INSTRUCTION SUSTAINED A MINOR INJURY TO HER ARM. THE STUDENT/PRIVATE PILOT (NOT QUALIFIED TO BE THE PIC DUE TO LACK OF TAILWHEEL ENDORSEMENT) WAS RECEIVING INSTRUCTION FOR THE PURPOSES OF A TAILWHEEL ENDORSEMENT. AFTER THE LOST POWER, THE PIC DETERMINED THAT THE AIRCRAFT MAY NOT HAVE ENOUGH ALTITUDE TO GLIDE TO THE RUNWAY AND MADE THE DECISION TO LAND ON THE TIDAL AREA OF THE COOK INLET FOR WHICH THE TIDE WAS CURRENTLY "OUT" AND THE TOUCHDOWN AREA WAS A MUDDY SURFACE. UPON TOUCHDOWN, THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPED ON ITS BACK DAMAGING AT LEAST THE PROPELLER AND VERTICAL STABILIZER OF THE AIRCRAFT. THE FLIGHT CREW RECEIVED LOCAL SAMARITAN ASSISTANCE EXITING THE AIRCRAFT. THE NTSB DETERMINED THE AIRCRAFT DAMAGE TO BE SUBSTANTIAL.

THE ALASKA STATE TROOPERS EXECUTED A RESCUE OF THE PIC WHO WAS UNABLE TO CLIMB THE 70 FOOT BLUFF. DUE TO THE RAPID TIDAL MOVEMENT, THE AIRCRAFT WAS LOST INTO THE COOK INLET BEFORE IT COULD BE RECOVERED. THE AIRCRAFT IS PRESUMED TO BE LOST.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC22LA033](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC22LA033), May 17, 2022: Taylorcraft F19 (N927AP), Anchorage, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: A loss of engine power for reasons that could not be determined due to a lack of available evidence.

## Other reports on N927AP (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19860411020899I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19860411020899I), Apr 11, 1986: Tcraft F19 (N927AP), Anchorage, AK, Minor damage. Aircraft did not respond to rudder on rollout. Struck a snowbank. Left rudder cable separated.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
