## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT DEPARTED SKY RANCH AIRPORT (AK50) HEADING WEST AND CLIMBED TO APPROXIMATELY 1500 FEET WHEN THE PROPELLER WENT TO HIGH RPM. PILOT TURNED TOWARDS PALMER, HEARD A LOUD BANG, AND EXPERIENCED SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT. A ?MAYDAY? CALL WAS MADE AND THE PILOT SAFELY LANDED ON SOUTH TRUNK ROAD WERE HE WAS MET BY THE STATE TROOPERS SOON AFTER LANDING. THE AIRCRAFT WAS THEN MOVED OFF THE ROADWAY AND THEN MOVED BACK TO AK50 BY HELICOPTER SLING LOAD THE FOLLOWING DAY. ON ENGINE INSPECTION THE FOLLOWING DAY PILOT AND MECHANIC DISCOVERED A HOLE IN THE REAR OF THE UPPER LEFT ENGINE CASING IN FRONT OF THE MAGNETO.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
