## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DEHAVILLAND BEAVER^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ IN NONDALTON, AK CRASHED DURING TAKEOFF FROM THE SOUTH SIDE OF ILIAMNA LAKE NEAR KOKHANOK, AK. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT HE WAS TAKING OFF PARALLEL TO THE SHORE LINE WITH APPROXIMATELY 15 TO 20 MILE PER HOUR HEADWINDS 20 DEGREES OFF THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT. DURING TAKEOFF THE FLOATPLANE WAS ONSTEP WHEN A GUST OF WIND CAUSED THE NOSE OF THE AIRCRAFT TO TURN 90 DEGREES. A SECOND GUST OF WIND CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO TURN AN ADDITIONAL 90 DEGREES SO THE AIRCRAFT WAS THEN 180 DEGREES FROM THE ORIGINAL TAKEOFF DIRECTION. THIS CAUSED THE 15 TO 20 MILE PER HEADWIND TO NOW BE A TAILWIND. THE AIRCRAFT SETTLED BACK TO THE WATER AND ONE OF THE FLOATS CAUGHT A WAVE WHICH CAUSED THE AIRPLANE TO FLIP OVER AND THEN CAME TO REST INVERTED. ALL THE PASSENGERS WERE EVACUATED SAFELY WITH ONLY MINOR INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC22LA050](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC22LA050), Jun 26, 2022: Dehavilland Beaver U-6A (N600NL), Kokhanok, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during takeoff in gusting wind conditions which resulted in a loss of control and impact with the water.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
