## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE 1946 LUSCOMBE 8A AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF, HEADING SOUTH INTO THE WIND, FROM A GRASS STRIP RUNWAY WHICH HAD A SLIGHT UPHILL GRADE, LOCATED AT 9VA4. 75-100 YARDS FROM THE END OF THE RUNWAY, WITH THE AIRCRAFT SLIGHTLY AIRBORNE, THE AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCED ENGINE SPUTTERING. THE PILOT REPORTS HE WAS AT FULL POWER AT THAT TIME AND OPTED TO CONTINUE THE TAKE OFF TO CLEAR THE RAIL FENCE WHICH RESIDED ACROSS THE ROAD THAT BORDERED THE END OF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT LANDING GEAR AND R/H ELEVATOR STRUCK THE TOP TWO FENCE BOARDS OF THE, THREE BOARD, RAIL FENCE, CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO DROP INTO THE FIELD BOARDED BY THE FENCE. DURING THE ENSUING ROLL OUT THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR COLLAPSED UNDER THE AIRCRAFT, CAUSING THE R/H WING AND ELEVATOR TO STRIKE THE GROUND, AND THE AIRCRAFT TO VEER TO THE RIGHT AND CAME TO A STOP. THE AIRCRAFT WAS FOUND TO BE RESTING ON THE LEFT MAIN LANDING GEAR, THE R/H WING TIP AND THE TAIL WHEEL.THE RIGHT MAIN LANDING GEAR WAS COLLAPSED AND HAD FOLDED AFT AND SLIGHTLY UNDER THE SIDE OF THE FUSELAGE, WITH THE MAIN LANDING GEAR WHEEL TIRE MAKING CONTACT WITH THAT PART OF THE FUSELAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA22LA292](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA22LA292), Jun 25, 2022: Luscombe 8 (N77863), New Market, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: Impact with a fence during an attempted takeoff from a short, uphill turf airstrip.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
