## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

(1) DESCRIPTION:

^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^WAS LANDING AT BUSBOOM (0LL5 RLA) AIRPORT. ON LANDING ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^DRIFTED TO THE LEFT OF THE GRASS RUNWAY AND THE LEFT WING HIT A CORN CROP. THE AIRCRAFT YAWED LEFT, ENTERED THE CORN CROP AND FLIPPED TAIL OVER NOSE.

(2) CAUSAL AND/OR CONTRIBUTING FACTORS:

THE PILOT WAS LANDING INTO THE SUN WITH LITTLE FORWARD VISIBILTY. THE PILOT WAS UNAWARE OF HIS DRIFT TO THE LEFT UNTIL HE HEARD THE LEFT WING "CLIPPING" THE CORN CROP. THE PILOT STATED HE APPLIED RUDDER BUT THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED LEFT, ENTERED THE CORN CROP. AND FLIPPED OVER.

(3) "ATC" AND RATIONAL IF ATC ACTIONS CONTRIBUTED TO THE EVENT:

NONE.

(4) RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SYSTEMIC CORRECTIVE ACTION:

EVENT NOT BASED ON A SYSTEMATIC ERROR. THE PILOT MADE A MISTAKE IN JUDGEMENT AND ALLOWED HIMSELF TO BE DISTRACTED.

(5) ACTIONS TAKEN TO ADDRESS THE TRANSGRESSION:

NONE.

(6) OTHER COMMENTS:

A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IS A TREE LOCATED AT THE APPROACH END OF THE RUNWAY. PILOTS WHO OPERATE OUT OF THIS PRIVATE AIRPORT FLY TO THE LEFT, UNTIL CLEAR OF THE TREE, THEN LINE UP BEFORE TOUCHDOWN.

(7) INVESTIGATION:

THE INVESTIGATION CONFIRMED THE PILOT WAS LANDING DIRECTLY INTO THE SUN LEADING TO A LACK OF FORWARD VISIBILITY. LIKEWISE, THE INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE PRIVATE AIRPORT HAS SOME OBSTACLE CHALLENGES WHEN LANDING RUNWAY 27.

(8) ROOT CAUSE ANALYSIS (RCA):

THIS DEVIATION WAS DUE TO THE PILOT BECOMING DISTACTED AND FOCUSSING ON OTHER TASKS.

(9) CORRECTIVE ACTION:

ASI CLOSED DEVIATION WITH A COMPLIANCE ACTION OF COUNSELING.

(10) COMMENTS:

ASI USED COUNSELING TO REGAIN COMPLIANCE. ASI IS SATISFIED THE PILOT'S CORRECTIVE ACTIONS AND IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW PERSONAL POLICIES, FULLY ADDRESS THE IDENTIFIED CAUSE AND HAVE REESTABLISHED COMPLIANCE. ASI RECOMMENDS NO FURTHER ACTION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN22LA329](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN22LA329), Jul 19, 2022: Cessna 172M (N9688Q), Saint Joseph, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to remain clear of obstacles while landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
