## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT WAS IN CRUISE FLIGHT ENROUTE TO OSHKOSH, WI WHEN HE LOST POWER AND STARTED TO SEE SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE COWLING. HE EXECUTED A FORCED LANDING OFF AIRPORT IN A PASTURE WITH THE GEAR IN THE RETRACTED POSITION. ON-SCENE EXAMINATION FOUND A FOUR INCH DIAMETER HOLE IN THE UPPER SIDE OF THE LEFT CRANKCASE HALF AND THE PISTON ROD DIRECTLY BELOW THE HOLE WAS SHEARED AT THE CRANK CASE BEARING RACE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN22LA330](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN22LA330), Jul 20, 2022: Beech N35 (N1228Z), Wardsville, MO, substantial damage. Probable cause: Engine failure due to oil starvation resulting from an oil leak at the improperly installed aftermarket oil filter adapter.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
