## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON SUNDAY, JULY 31, 2022, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ THE PILOT IN COMMAND (PIC), OF^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ A CESSNA 182, OPERATED A FLIGHT UNDER VISUAL FLIGHT RULES (VFR) FROM WITTMAN REGIONAL AIRPORT (KOSH) TO JOLIET REGIONAL AIRPORT (KJOT). DUE TO THE WIND DIRECTION, THE PIC CHOSE TO LAND ON RUNWAY 22. RUNWAY 22 IS A TURF (GRASS) RUNWAY. WHEN THE PIC WAS ATTEMPTING TO LAND THE AIRCRAFT AT 11:58 AM CENTRAL TIME, THE NOSE GEAR OF THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK THE GROUND FIRST. THE AIRCRAFT THEN BOUNCED AND THE NOSE GEAR STRUCK THE GROUND. THIS OCCURRED FOR A TOTAL OF THREE TIMES, WITH EACH BOUNCE BEING PROGRESSIVELY HIGHER THAN THE PREVIOUS. THE AIRCRAFT EVENTUALLY LANDED ON THE TURF RUNWAY.

THE PIC DID CONSIDER A GO-AROUND, BUT DID NOT PERFORM ONE.

THE PIC TAXIED THE AIRCRAFT TO THE RAMP SO THAT IT MAY BE FUELED. THE PIC PROVIDED INSTRUCTIONS TO FUEL THE AIRCRAFT TO THE LINEMAN WORKING AT THE TIME. THE PIC ATTEMPTED TO OPEN THE LEFT DOOR TO EXIT THE AIRCRAFT. THIS DOOR WOULD NOT OPEN. THE PIC EXITED THE AIRCRAFT FROM THE DOOR ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE AIRCRAFT. AFTER EXITING THE AIRCRAFT, THE PIC PERFORMED AN EXTERNAL INSPECTION WHICH REVEALED SKIN CRUMPLING ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE AIRCRAFT AND THE TIPS OF THE PROPELLER BENT BACKWARDS.

THERE WERE NO INJURIES.

THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE FORWARD BULKHEAD/FIREWALL, AND NOSE SECTION STRINGERS AND FORMERS.

DURING INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT, THE ELEVATOR WAS SHOWN HAVE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF MOVEMENT WITH THE GUST LOCK SECURED IN THE CONTROL COLUMN.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN22LA379](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN22LA379), Jul 31, 2022: Cessna 182E (N3519Y), Joliet, IL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s inadequate landing flare, which resulted in a hard, bounced landing.

## Other reports on N3519Y (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Incident 19880710036779I](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19880710036779I), Jul 10, 1988: Cessna 182 (N3519Y), Reedsville, PA. Rough engine at cruise altitude. Unable to maintain altitude. Diverted. NR5 cylinder piston had failed.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
