## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON NOVEMBER 11, 2022 AT APPX 1730 HST, FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR AND PRIVATE RATED STUDENT PILOT WERE CONDUCTING A FLIGHT TO GAUGE STUDENTS READINESS FOR COMMERCIAL CHECK RIDE. TOWARDS THE END OF THE FLIGHT, WHILE AT KALAELOA AIRPORT, THE STUDENT PILOT WAS AT THE CONTROLS AND INITIATED A SIMULATED ENGINE FAILURE FROM A HOVER. STUDENT PILOT UNEXPECTANTLY RAPIDLY ROLLED THROTTLE TO IDLE AND CFI WAS UNABLE TO ANTICIPATE RAPID LOSS OF TRANSVERSE FLOW AND SIDEWARD MOTION. DURING THE MANEUVER THE STUDENT PILOT LOST CONTROL OF THE HELICOPTER, IT SLID LEFT, THEN AFT AS IT CONTACTED THE GROUND IT ROLLED TO THE LEFT ONTO ITS SIDE, SUSTAINING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR23LA043](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR23LA043), Nov 11, 2022: Robinson Helicopter R22 (N948WB), Kapolei, HI, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot receiving instruction’s rapid reduction in throttle during hover autorotation training which resulted in a loss of control and collision with the ground.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
