## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED AT A PRIVATE AIRPORT (FL82) IN OAKHILL FLORIDA. THE AIRPORT HAS ONE RUNWAY (RUNWAY 17/35). THIS AIRPORT IS A FLY-IN COMMUNITY WITH RESIDENTS LIVING ALONG THE RUNWAY. THE RUNWAY IS GRASS AND ABOUT 3335 FEET LONG.

PILOT HAD JUST TRADED FOR THIS AIRCRAFT,^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ A DA-2 AMATEUR BUILT. THE AIRCRAFT HAD CONVENTIONAL LANDING GEAR.

WITNESSES DESCRIBED WHAT APPEARED TO BE THE PILOT TAXING BACK AND FORTH ON RUNWAY 17/35 TO GET USED TO THE AIRCRAFT BEFORE BEGINNING WHAT WAS ASSUMED TO BE HIS TAKEOFF ROLL ON RUNWAY 17 WHEN THEY HEARD THE INCREASE IN ENGINE POWER. WITNESSES SAID THAT ABOUT MIDWAY DOWN THE RUNWAY THE PILOT BEGAN TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND VEERED RAPIDLY OFF TO THE LEFT. THE AIRCRAFT STRUCK A TREE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT SUFFERED FATAL INJURIES AND THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED.

THERE WERE TIRE MARKS IN THE GRASS FROM THE POINT THAT THE PILOT BEGAN TO LOSE CONTROL UP TO THE IMPACT WITH THE TREE THAT SUPPORTED THE DESCRIPTION FROM WITNESSES.

THE WEATHER WAS GOOD VISUAL FLIGHT CONDITIONS WITH SOME WIND THAT WAS DESCRIBED AS LIGHT TO BREEZY AND OUT OF THE WEST.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA23FA060](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA23FA060), Nov 15, 2022: Detrick Donald G Detrick DA-2 (N4307Q), Oak Hill, FL, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The student pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during the takeoff roll, which resulted in a runway excursion and collision with a tree.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
