ON 11/27/2022, A CESSNA 177 (N2994X) DEPARTED LAKE HAVASU, ARIZONA (KHII) AT 1245 LOCAL TIME WITH A PLANNED DESTINATION OF SEDONA, ARIZONA (KSEZ). VMC CONDITIONS PREVAILED THROUGHOUT THE FLIGHT. PILOT IN COMMAND (PIC) ESTIMATED APPROXIMATELY 34 GALLONS OF USABLE FUEL ON BOARD PRIOR TO DEPARTURE AND, BASED ON PRIOR FLIGHTS FROM KHII TO KSEZ, APPROXIMATELY 12 GALLONS WOULD BE CONSUMED FOR THIS FLIGHT. AFTER DEPARTURE, PIC CLIMBED TO AN INDICATED 9,500 FEET. PIC STATES THAT AFTER APPROXIMATELY 9 OR 10 MINUTES AT 9,500 FEET INDICATED ALTITUDE, THE ENGINE LOST POWER. PIC INFORMED ALB CTR OF LOSS OF POWER AND BEGAN LOOKING FOR POSSIBLE LOCATIONS TO LAND WHILE HE WAS ATTEMPTING ENGINE RESTART. PIC WAS ADVISED OF A PRIVIATE AIRSTRIP APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES FROM HIS CURRENT LOCATION WHICH HE WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE. PIC ASSUMED AN APPROXIAMTE 1000 FT PER MINUTE DECENT AND IDENTIFIED A DIRT ROAD WHICH HE ATTEMPTED TO LAND ON. UPON LANDING ATTEMPT, THE AIRCRAFT NOSE WHEEL IMPACTED TERRAIN FIRST RESULTING IN THE AIRCRAFT FLIPPING UPSIDE DOWN COMING TO REST OFF OF AND PARALLEL TO THE DIRT ROAD. THE AIRCRAFT SUFFERED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE FUSELAGE, ENGINE, ENGINE MOUNTS, ENGINE COWLING, PROP, STABLILIZERS, AND LANDING GEAR. AT THE TIME OF THIS REPORT, A DETAILED EXAM HAS NOT BEEN CONDUCTED. A DETAILED EXAM WAS PERFORMED ON 01/12/2023. FUEL MIXTURE CABLE APPEARED TO HAVE WEAR NOT CONSISTANT WITH DAMAGE RESULTING FROM THE ACCIDENT. NTSB ANALYSIS IS BEING CONDUCTED. THIS REPORT WILL BE AMENDED AS APPROPRIATE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR23LA060](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR23LA060), Nov 27, 2022: Cessna 177 (N2994X), Willow Spring, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The airplane’s loss of engine power for undetermined reasons.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
