## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

UPON LANDING ON RUNWAY 16 AT THE SHELBY COUNTY AIRPORT (EET), THE TAIL WHEEL MECHANISM FAILED CAUSING THE PILOT TO LOSE CONTROL AS THE AIRCRAFT SWERVED TO THE RIGHT AND OFF OF THE RUNWAY. AS A RESULT THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA23LA088](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA23LA088), Dec 10, 2022: Cessna 305 (N5301G), Alabaster, AL, substantial damage. Probable cause: Failure of the tailwheel locking mechanism, which resulted in a loss of control during landing and a runway excursion.

## Other reports on N5301G (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

- [Accident 19900715025629A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19900715025629A), Jul 15, 1990: Cessna 305A (N5301G), Fruitdale, AL, Destroyed, 1 fatal. Observed circling at low altitude. Wing hit tree. Crashed into ground. Pilot tested positive alcohol.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
