## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 02/15/2023 APPROXIMATLY 1245 LOCAL, STUDENT PILOT WITH NO ENFORCEMENT HISTORY WAS RECEIVING INSTRUCTION PRACTICING TAKEOFF AND LANDING, FROM A CERTIFIED FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR WITH NO ENFORCEMENT HISTORY, IN A PA-28-151. DURING LANDING ON RUNWAY 24 AT FULLERTON AIRPORT(KFUL), THE PA-28-151 WAS PUSHED BY A GUST OF WIND TO THE LEFT TOWARD GRASS BETWEEN THE RUNWAY AND TAXIWAY B. THE CFI ADDED RIGHT RUDDER TO ATTEMP TO CORRECT AND ADDED THOTTLE TO GO AROUND. PA-28-151 ENTERED THE PATTERN AND CIRCLED ON HOLD WHILE THE AIRPORT OPERATIONS CHECKED THE RUNWAY FOR DEBRIS. ONCE CLEARED PA-28-151 MADE A LOW APPROACH SO THE TOWER AND OPERATIONS COULD VERIFY THE PLANE AND LANDING GEAR LOOKED NORMAL. DURING A DISCUSION WITH THE TOWER, A DECISION WAS MADE TO RETURNM TO JOHN WAYNE(KSNA) AS A BETTER OPTION WHERE THE PLANE WAS BASED. PA-28-151 LANDED AND PARKED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. DURING THE EVENT DAMAGES APPEAR TO BE, PA-28-151 HIT A TAXIWAY SIGN, WHICH WAS DESTROYED. THE PITOT TUBE ON THE LEFT WING WAS DAMAGED AND TORN OFF THE AIRCRAFT LEAVING ONLY THE BASE. ABOUT 18 INCHES INBOARD THE SKIN WAS TORN JUST FORWARD OF THE MID SPAR. THE SPAR DAMAGED AND THE SKIN AFT OF THE SPAR WAS BUCKLED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR23LA119](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR23LA119), Feb 15, 2023: Piper PA28 (N8318C), Fullerton, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's failure to maintain control of the airplane during the landing roll and the flight instructor’s delayed remedial action, which resulted in an impact with an obstacle.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
