## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ONE FEBRUARY 17, 2023 A PILOT AND TWO FAMILY MEMBERS DEPARTED ATLANTA REGIONAL (KFFC) IN A CIRRUS SR22 AIRPLANE HEADING TO FERNANDINA BEACH (KFHB). THE PILOT NOTED CLOUDY CONDITIONS UPON APPROACH, CHECKED THE WEATHER ON AWOS FREQUENCY. THE PILOT STATED THE DECENT WAS BLUSTERY AND BROKE THROUGH THE CLOUDS AT ABOUT 800 FT AND COULD CLEARLY SEE THE RUNWAY. DURING THE FINAL LANDING PHASE, SLOW AND NOSE UP A SUDDEN GUST OF WIND BLEW THE AIRCRAFT INTO THE RUNWAY SIGN RWY 27. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE COMPOSITE DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT UNDERWINGS AND CARRY THROUGH AS WELL AS THE FUSELAGE AT THE FIREWALL. THERE WERE NO INJURIES.

SPOKE WITH SEVERAL OPERATIONS INSPECTORS AND IT IS THEIR OPINION THAT THE WEATHER WAS THE MAJOR CAUSE OF THIS ACCIDENT AND THAT NO CORRECTIVE ACTION WAS NEEDED FOR THE PILOT

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA23LA150](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA23LA150), Feb 17, 2023: Cirrus Design SR22 (N740NG), Fernandina Beach, FL, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain control of the airplane while landing in gusting crosswind conditions, with resulted in a runway excursion and collision with a runway identifier sign.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
