## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON FEBRURARY 20, 2023 AT APPROXIMATELY 12:53 CST, A 2007 AMERICAN CHAMPION AIRCRAFT TAIL DRAGGER BEARING THE ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, WAS ON A INSTRUCTION FLIGHT AT WILIEY POST AIRPORT (KPWA) BETHANY, OKLAHOMA. AIRCRAFT ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS OBSERVED SWERVING OFF RUNWAY 17R INTO THE GRASS ON THE EAST SIDE OF RUNWAY 17R. THE AIRCRAFT TAXIED BACK ONTO RUNWAY I7R AND EXITED THE MOVEMENT AREA ON THE TAXI WAY. SUBSEQUENT INSPECTION BY THE AIRPORT STAFF WHILE LOOKING FOR THE WHEEL COVER REVEALED TAXIWAY A5 SIGN DAMAGE ON THE WEST SIDE OF RUNWAY 17R, ALONG WITH THE PIECES OF THE MISSING WHEEL COVER.

THE PILOT STATED “MY STUDENT ATTEMPTED THE LANDING AND WAS UNSUCCESSFUL IN HIS ATTEMPT AND INITIATED A POWER UP GO-AROUND AT WHICH TIME I TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT. ONCE STABILIZED, I ELECTED TO PERFORM A LANDING ON THE REMAINING RUNWAY. THE INITIAL TOUCHDOWN WAS UNEVENTFUL, HOWEVER, AFTER TOUCHDOWN, THE AIRCRAFT TURNED SHARPLY TO THE RIGHT AS THOUGH THE RIGHT RUDDER HAD BEEN FULLY DEPRESSED. THE AIRCRAFT LEFT THE RUNWAY AND I USED THE POWER, BRAKES AND CONTROLS TO CONTROL THE AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT RETURNED AND CROSSED THE RUNWAY. I TURNED THE AIRCRAFT AND SLOWER TO RETURN TO THE RUNWAY. AS I OCCUPIED THE BACK SEAT O?? THE AIRCRAFT, I USED MY PERIPHERAL VISION FOR ORIENTATION. I DID NOT SEE ANY OBSTRUCTION UNTIL THE SIGN THAT I STRUCK APPEARED TO MY LEFT AND STRUCK MY LEFT WHEEL PANT. I CONTINUED ONTO THE RUNWAY AND WAS CONTACTED BY THE TOWER AND TOLD TO CONTACT THEM UPON SHUTDOWN TO RECEIVE A TELEPHONE NUMBER TO CALL. I TAXIED TO MY HANGER AND SHUT DOWN THE AIRCRAFT I CALLED THE NUMBER AS INSTRUCTED.”

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN23LA121](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN23LA121), Feb 20, 2023: American Champion 8KCAB (N303SB), Oklahoma City, OK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during the landing, that resulted in a runway excursion, and an impact with an obstacle.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
