## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

IN PREPARATION FOR TWO TRAINING FLIGHTS, THE CFI DIRECTED THE TWO STUDENTS TO CONDUCT THE PREFLIGHT. THE STUDENTS DETERMINED BY A DIP STICK THAT ONE TANK MEASURED ABOUT HALF FULL AND THE SECOND TANK MEASURED ABOUT 3/8 FULL. ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTOR THE FUEL GAGES INDICATED ABOUT HALF FULL.

THE CFI DEPARTED ON THE FIRST TRAINING FLIGHT WITH ONE STUDENT THAT CONSISTED OF 1.2 HOURS. THIS TRAINING FLIGHT CONSISTED OF PRACTICE MANEUVERS AND 5 TOUCH AND GO LANDINGS. THE FIRST TRAINING FLIGHT TERMINATED AT LWS WHERE THE CFI CHANGED STUDENTS AND DEPARTED ON THE SECOND TRAINING FLIGHT WITHOUT TAKING ON ADDITIONAL FUEL. THE SECOND TRAINING FLIGHT WAS ABOUT 1.3 HOURS

THE SECOND TRAINING FLIGHT CULMINATED WITH MULTIPLE TRAFFIC PATTERN CIRCUITS. ON THE FOURTH PATTERN, THE CFI REQUESTED AND WAS CLEARED FOR A FULL STOP LANDING ON RWY 08. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE CFI REQUESTED AND WAS CLEARED FOR ONE MORE TOUCH AND GO FOLLOWED BY A FULL STOP LANDING.

JUST AFTER BEING INSTRUCTED TO FOLLOW TRAFFIC AHEAD, THE CFI REPORTED POSSIBLY RUNNING OUT OF FUEL. ATC CLEARED ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ TO LAND ON ANY RUNWAY. THE CFI COMMENTED THAT THE ENGINE “SPUTTERED”, THEN REPORTED THAT “WE’LL TAKE 30”. THE CFI OVERSHOT RWY 30 AND LANDED ON THE ADJACENT GOLF COURSE. THE AIRCRAFT’S RIGHT WING STRUCK A TREE RESULTING IN SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR23LA127](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR23LA127), Mar 11, 2023: Cessna 172L (N7010Q), Lewiston, ID, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor’s inadequate fuel planning and improper in-flight decision-making, which resulted in a total loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
