## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

APPROXIMATLY 13:26 EDT ON MARCH 24TH, 2023 ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, A PIPER MALIBU WAS ON AN IFR FLIGHT PLAN FROM MOUNT STERLING/MONTGOMERY COUNTY AIRPORT (KIOB) IN KENTUCKY TO DEQUEEN J. LYNN HELMS AIRPORT (KDEQ) IN ARKANSAS. THE AIRCRAFT ENTERED ICING CONDITIONS DURING THE CLIMB AND LOST CONTROL AROUND 14,300 FEET. THEN THE AIRCRAFT EXPERIENCED A RAPID DECENT WHERE THE PILOT RECOVERED AT ABOUT 8,900 FEET WITHIN ABOUT 30 SECONDS ACCORDING TO ADS-B DATA.

THE PIC STATED, AS HE NOTICED THE AIRCRAFT LOSING AIRSPEED, CHECKING THE WINGS, NO ICE ACCUMLATON WAS NOTED. AS HE TURNED ON THE PITOT HEAT, THE MFD AND PFD DISPLAYED RED X'S. AIRMEN STATED THE SCREENS THEN WENT BLACK. THIS IS WHEN THE AIRCRAFT PITCHED ABRUPTLY FORWARD. AS THE AIRCRAFT DESENDED INTO VMC CONDITIONS, THE PIC REGAINED TOTAL CONTROL WITH THE PFD AND MFD COMMING BACK ONLINE. HE SPOKE WITH THE CONTROLLER AND CONTINUED FLIGHT, LANDING IN ARKADELPHIA ARKANSAS (KADF) WITHOUT FUTHER INCIDENT. THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT WITH NO IINJURES REPORTED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR23LA236](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR23LA236), Mar 24, 2023: Piper PA-46-310P (N146MS), Springfield, KY, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to activate the pitot heat in a timely manner during flight into icing conditions, which resulted in a temporary failure of the flight instruments and a subsequent loss of control.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
