PIC ATTEMPTED SECOND APPROACH, AIRCRAFT WAS ON CENTERLINE & PROPERLY SET UP, JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN WINDS GUSTED FROM THE WEST. THE AIRCRAFT VEERIED OFF CENTERLINE. THE PIC ADDED FULL THROTTLE TO REGAIN CONTROL. THE ENGINE DID NOT RESPOND, AN AUDIBLE "POP" WAS HEARD.

THE PIC FOCUSED ON A GRASS AREA PARALLEL TO THE TAXIWAY TO LAND. WHILE AVOIDING PARKED AIRCRAFT ON FLIGHTLINE. UPON TOUCHDOWN THE LANDING GEAR STRUCK A DRAINAGE DITCH EMBANKMENT AND SHEARED THE LEFT MAIN WHEEL ASSEMBLY.

THE PIC AND PASSENGER DID NOT REQUIRE MEDICAL ATTENTION.

THE MEMPHIS FSDO WAS NOTIFIED THE NEXT DAY. TWO INSPECTORS WERE DISPATCHED TO THE SCENE.

UPON ARRIVAL THE INSPECTORS CONDUCTED INVESTIGATION AND INSPECTION OF AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain airplane control while landing with a left gusting crosswind. Contributing to the accident was the partial loss of engine power during the go-around.
