## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MAY 7, 2023, AT APPROXIMATELY 1340 MDT, A UNIVERSAL GLOBE GC-1A, A FIXED-WING SINGLE-ENGINE AIRCRAFT,^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AT THE BELEN, NM, REGIONAL AIRPORT, KBRG. DURING CLIMBOUT AFTER TAKEOFF FROM RWY 31, AT ABOUT 75 FEET AGL, THE PILOT EXPERIENCED A STRONG QUARTERING TAILWIND WHICH CAUSED THE AIRCRAFT TO BEGIN DESCENDING; THE PILOT ATTEMPTED TO EXTEND THE LANDING GEAR IN PREPARATION TO LAND ON THE REMAINING RUNWAY. THE PROPELLER MADE CONTACT WITH THE GROUND TO THE RIGHT OF THE RUNWAY BEFORE THE LANDING GEAR WAS FULLY EXTENDED. NO FAA FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED AT THE BELEN, NM, REGIONAL AIRPORT, KBRG, AND WAS THE FIRST FLIGHT OF THE DAY. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE. THE FAA ATP-RATED PILOT AND SINGLE PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR23LA178](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR23LA178), May 7, 2023: Universal Globe GC-1A (N80892), Belen, NM, destroyed. Probable cause: The airplane’s encounter with downdraft on takeoff, which resulted in a loss of control.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
