## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING FIRST FLIGHT AFTER ANNUAL INSPECTION PIC AND CO-WORKER DEPARTED DULUTH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (KDLH) AND FLEW TO PROPERTY OWNED BY PIC. DATA RECOVERED FROM THE AIRCRAFTS PORTABLE GPS SHOWS A LOW PASS OVER THE PIC’S PRIVATE AIRSTRIP THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN A DESCENDING LEFT TURN AT APPROXIMATELY 250 FT AGL. AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND APPROXIMATELY 320 FEET FROM THE POINT THE AIRCRAFT STARTED THE LEFT TURN. THE AIRPLANE CAME TO REST IN A NOSE LOW ATTITUDE AND THE RIGHT WING WAS CRUSHED AFT FROM ABOUT MID SPAN TO THE WING TIP. THE AFT FUSELAGE AND EMPENNAGE REMAINED INTACT AND WERE DISPLACED TO THE RIGHT. THE ENGINE AND PROPELLER REMAINED ATTACHED AND WERE PARTIALLY BURIED IN THE GROUND. ONE PROPELLER BLADE WAS BENT AFT ABOUT MID SPAN AND EXHIBITED LEADING EDGE GOUGES AND CHORDWISE SCRATCHES. THE OTHER BLADE WAS MOSTLY STRAIGHT AND EXHIBITED LEADING EDGE DAMAGE. THE SURROUNDING TREE CANOPY APPEARED UNDISTURBED, WITH NO NOTICEABLE DAMAGE. SEVERAL SMALL TREES (UP TO 1.5 INCH DIAMETER) NEAR IMPACT CUT AT 45 DEGREE ANGLE. COMBINED WEIGHT OF PILOT AND PASSENGER WAS APPROXIMATELY 440 LBS, USEFUL LOAD OF THE AIRCRAFT WAS 390 LBS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN23FA248](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN23FA248), Jun 21, 2023: Aeronca 7CCM (N308ED), Duluth, MN, substantial damage, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot’s exceedance of the airplane’s critical angle of attack and failure to maintain adequate airspeed, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall and loss of control.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
