## Narrative

ON 06/24/2023 AT APPROXIMATELY 0800PDT, AVIAT A-1B AIRPLANE STRUCK AND SEVERELY INJURED A PERSON LOCATED ON A DRY LAKE BED NORTH OF JEAN, NEVADA.

THE PILOT OF THE AIRCRAFT HAD TAKEN OFF FROM THE DRY LAKE BED AND WAS OPERATING THE AIRCRAFT AS A BACKGROUND OR SUBJECT AIRCRAFT AS PART OF A PHOTOGRAPHIC SHOOT.

THE AIRCRAFT REPORTEDLY MADE TWO LOW PASSES OVERHEAD OF THE PERSON, WHO WAS THE PRIMARY SUBJECT MODEL FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SESSION.

ON THE THIRD PASS OVER THE MODEL, THE AIRCRAFT REPORTEDLY STRUCK THE MODEL, HITTING HER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD AND SEVERELY INJURING HER HEAD AND RIGHT HAND, WHICH HAD BEEN ON TOP OF HER HEAD AT THE TIME OF INJURY.

THE DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT WAS LIMITED TO THE OUTER PORTION OF THE LEFT WINGTIP.

REPORT TO BE AMENDED AFTER ADDITIONAL WITNESSES ARE LOCATED AND INTERVIEWED AND ADDITIONAL PILOT INFORMATION IS OBTAINED. A FINAL DETERMINATION WILL BE MADE AT THAT TIME.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR23LA259](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR23LA259), Jun 24, 2023: Aviat A-1B (N307F), Las Vegas, NV, minor damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s unsafe inflight operation of the airplane and failure to maintain clearance from a person on the ground, which resulted in a serious injury.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
