## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE STUDENT WAS ON HIS LAST FLIGHT TO RECEIVE HIS TAIL WHEEL ENDORSEMENT AND WAS REPORTED AS BEING PROFICIENT AND PREPARED TO LAND ON A REMOTE BACKCOUNTRY DIRT AIRSTRIP LOCATED AT LAT/LONG 41.1757, -112.3808. THE STRIP IS 10 FEET WIDE AND 1828 FEET LONG, WITH ABOUT 200 FEET OF GRASS TO EITHER SIDE. UPON LANDING, THE AIRCRAFT WAS CENTERED ON THE RUNWAY AND THE TAIL WHEEL PLANTED. WHEN THE STUDENT APPLIED THE BRAKES, HE LOCKED THE LEFT BRAKE, AND FROZE. THE INSTRUCTOR COULD NOT GET THE STUDENT TO RELEASE THE BRAKE IN TIME TO AVOID THE GROUND LOOP. AT APPROXIMATELY 20 KNOTS, THE AIRCRAFT GROUND LOOPED CAUSING SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGING THE RIGHT WING TIP AND RIGHT ELEVATOR. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR23LA260](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR23LA260), Jul 7, 2023: Cessna 170B (N1664D), Fremont Island, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot undergoing instruction’s excessive application of asymmetrical braking during landing, which resulted in a ground loop.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
