## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JULY 16, 2023 AT APPROXIMATLEY 1550 EDT, THE AIRCRAFT EXITED RUNWAY 19 AT GREENWOOD AIRPORT (HFY). THE WEATHER WAS VFR, THE RUNWAY WAS DRY AND THE WIND WAS GIVEN AS 12 KNOTS AT 190. THE PILOT ESTIMATED A 2 TO 3 KNOT CROSSWIND. THE AIRCRAFT EXITED THE RUNWAY ABOUT 1100 FEET FROM THE DEPARTURE POINT. THE AIRCRAFT THEN TRAVELED ACROSS THE GRASS FIELD A DISTANCE OF OVER 700 FEET, COMING TO REST IN A DITCH. DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT APPEARS TO BE SUBSTANTIAL WITH WRINKLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER SKIN OF THE LEFT WING. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED TO THE SOLE OCCUPANT/PILOT OF THE AIRCRAFT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN23LA307](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN23LA307), Jul 12, 2023: Cessna 172N (N701DE), Greenwood, IN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
