## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 08/01/2023, AT APPROXIMATELY 7:16 PM EASTERN TIME, A KITFOX MODEL 3 AIRCRAFT TOOK OFF FROM HONAKER AIRFIELD (3R8) SCOTTSBURG, INDIANA. THE AIRCRAFT CLIMBED TO APPROXIMATELY 75 FEET ABOVE GROUND LEVEL BEFORE GOING INTO A DIVE. THE AIRCRAFT IMPACTED THE GROUND AT AN APPROXIMATE 45 DEGREE ANGLE IN A CORNFIELD EAST OF THE RUNWAY.

A WITNESS REPORTED THE AIRCRAFT REACHED TREE TOP LEVEL, DRIFTED TO THE RIGHT AND EXPERIENCED A STALL. A FEW MOMENTS LATER THE RIGHT WING DROPPED AND THE AIRCRAFT WENT INTO A DIVE AND IT APPEARED THE PILOT WAS TRYING TO PULL OUT OF A DIVE. THE WITNESS WAS ABLE TO LOCATE THE AIRCRAFT BY THE SOUND OF THE AIRCRAFT ENGINE REVING AT HIGH RPM'S AT THE IMPACT SITE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN23LA381](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN23LA381), Aug 1, 2023: George Stone KIT FOX Model 3 (N815US), Scottsburg, IN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s failure to maintain airplane control after takeoff that resulted in an impact with terrain.

Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
