## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE COMMERCIAL RATED PILOTS WHILE FERRY FLYING AN UNFAMILAIR AIRPLANE TO THE NEW OWNER HAD AN ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO FUEL STARVATION. THE PILOTS NOTICED THAT THE FUEL GAUGES INDICATED EMPTY AND DECIDED TO CONTINUE THE FLIGHT BASED ON FUEL USEAGE CALCULATIONS. AN OFF-AIRPORT LANDING ENSUED AND THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. NEITHER PILOT SUSTAINED INJURIES. THE AIRCRAFT RECORDS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. PILOT RECORDS WERE REVIEWED AND FOUND TO HAVE THE CORRECT CERIFICATION AND CURRENCY REQUIREMENTS.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR23LA308](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR23LA308), Aug 8, 2023: Piper PA-28-180 (N8823J), Ritchfield, UT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s improper preflight planning that resulted in the loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
