## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON OCTOBER 8, 2023, AT APPROXIMATELY 0815 MDT, A CAMERON A-105 BALLOON WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT IN ALBUQUERQUE, NM. DURING FLIGHT, THE WIND BEGAN TO INCREASE AND THE PILOT DECIDED TO LAND. THE FIRST ATTEMPT AT LANDING HAD TO BE ABORTED BECAUSE ANOTHER BALLOON WAS IN THE WAY. DURING THE SECOND ATTEMPT AT LANDING, THE PILOT SAID THAT THEY USED THE BALLOON'S SMART VENT TO DECEND IN ORDER TO MISS POWER LINES. THE BALLOON EXPERIENCED A HARD LANDING IN A DIRT FIELD AND ONE PASSENGER WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED. THE PRIVATE PILOT AND THE OTHER PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED NO DAMAGE. NO FAA FLIGHT PLAN WAS FILED. THE FLIGHT ORIGINATED AT ALBUQUERQUE BALLOON FIESTA FIELD. THE PILOT REPORTED THAT THERE WERE NO MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS OR FAILURES THAT WOULD HAVE PRECLUDED NORMAL OPERATION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR24LA011](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR24LA011), Oct 8, 2023: Cameron Balloons US A-105 (N105BM), Albuquerque, NM, no damage. Probable cause: A hard landing to a short field, due to windy conditions and a lack of suitable alternate landing areas, which resulted in a passenger sustaining a broken ankle.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
