## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

CFI AND STUDENT DEPARTED AIRPORT (HANOVER COUNTY, VA KOFP) TRAFFIC PATTERN AND FLEW TO LOCAL PRACTICE AREA, PERFORMED SEVERAL PRIVATE PILOT MANEUVERS AT 3000 FEET MSL WITHOUT INCIDENT. DURING RETURN TO AIRPORT AT CRUISE POWER SETTING, ENGINE RAN ROUGH FOR A FEW SECONDS AND CLEARED. PIC REDUCED POWER FOR INITIAL DECENT AND ENGINE STARTED TO RUN ROUGH ONCE AGAIN. PIC ATTEMPTED TO ADD POWER, BUT THE ENGINE DID NOT RESPOND AND REMAINED AT AN IDLE POWER SETTING. PIC PITCHED THE AIRCRAFT FOR BEST GLIDE AND ATTEMPTED TO EXECUTE AN ON-FIELD LANDING BY FLYING A DOWNWIND, BASE, AND FINAL LEGS OF THE APPROACH, BUT LOST CRITICAL ALTTUDE AND SUBSEQUENTLY LANDED SHORT OF THE RUNWAY THRESHOLD IN A FIELD OUTSIDE OF AIRPORT PROPERTY. RIGHT WING INCURRED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE AFTER STRIKING A TREE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA24LA016](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA24LA016), Oct 21, 2023: Cessna 172L (N7716G), Richmond, VA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The loss of engine power due to a restriction of fuel flow as a result of a fractured float bracket in the carburetor.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
