## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON NOVEMBER 18TH THE PIC DEPARTED FROM GTF FOR GPI. THE PIC REQUESTED 5 GALLONS OF GAS BE ADDED TO THE AIRPLANE. THE PIC THOUGHT THE AIRPLANE ALREADY HAD 21 GALLONS ON BOARD BUT DID NOT VERIFY THE QUANTITY. AFTER APROX. THREE AND A HALF HOURS OF FLIGHT TIME THE AIRPLANE ARRIVED IN THE VICINITY OF GPI. THE AIRPORT WAS REPORTING 800 FOOT CEILINGS. THE PIC DID NOT REQUEST A SPECIAL VFR CLEARANCE TO LAND AT HIS DESTINATION. THE PIC DECIDED TO FLY BACK TO GTF BELIEVING HE HAD PLENTY OF FUEL ON BOARD TO MAKE IT BACK TO GTF. AFTER APROX. FOUR HOURS OF FLYING, THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING AND THE PIC CONDUCTED AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN HUNGRY HORSE RESEVOIR.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR24LA048](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR24LA048), Nov 18, 2023: Flight Design Ctls (N924RD), Hungry Horse, MT, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's inadequate fuel planning and improper in-flight decision-making, which resulted in a total loss of engine power due to fuel exhaustion.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
