## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AFTER FLYING OVER A FROZEN LAKE THE PIC FOUND AN AREA THAT APPEARED TO BE SUITABLE TO LAND. UPON LANDING THE PIC REALIZED THAT BRAKING WAS MINIMAL DUE TO THE GLARE ICE. THE PIC WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE AIRCRAFT IN THE AREA THAT HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED TO LAND AND THE DECISION WAS MADE TO GO AROUND. FULL POWER WAS APPLIED BUT THE AIRCRAFT FELL THROUGH THIN ICE COMING TO REST PARTIALLY SUBMERGED SUPPORTED BY THE WING STRUTS. THE PILOT AND PASSENGER WERE ABLE TO EXIT THE AIRCRAFT WITHOUT INJURY. DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT INCLUDED BUT WAS NOT LIMITED TO PROPELLER STRIKE, DENTS IN BOTH UPPER AND LOWER ENGINE COWLING, STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO LOWER FIREWALL AT ENGINE MOUNTING POINT, DENTS IN BOTTOM OF FUSELAGE AND BROKEN RIGHT WING TIP FAIRING.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN24LA072](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN24LA072), Dec 19, 2023: Cessna 172M (N46056), Red Lake, MN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s inadequate landing surface evaluation and failure to stop the airplane on the frozen lake, which resulted the airplane continuing into a crack in the ice.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
