## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AFTER CAREFUL INVESTIGATION OF THE EVIDENCE AND LN COLLABORATION WITH THE NTSB, IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THE ACCIDENT WAS DUE TO PILOT ERROR. ALL STATEMENTS FROM THE CREW WERE CONSISTENT IN WHICH ALL PARTIES STATED THAT THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS OF A LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AND NO INDICATIONS OF ANY OTHER SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONS. BOTH PILOT AND FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR WERE RATED IN THE AIRCRAFT. THE INTENT OF THE FLIGHT WAS A TRANSITION TRAINING FLIGHT DUE TO THE PILOT BEING UNFAMILIAR WITH THE MAKE AND MODEL. DURING THE TOUCH AND GO EVENT LEADING UP TO THE ACCIDENT AT THE BYRON AIRPORT, THE CREW STATED THAT THEY WERE ON A STABILIZED APPROACH COMING IN ON THEIR SECOND TIME IN THE PATTERN. IT WAS STATED THAT THE AIRCRAFT TRANSITIONED INTO THE FLARE LATE WHICH CAUSED THEM TO BE CLOSER IN PROXIMITY TO THE GROUND THAN NORMAL. DUE TO A POSSIBLE INAPPROPRIATE LANDING ATTITUDE, THE AIRCRAFT BOUNCED AND WENT THROUGH A SERIES OF PITCH OSCILLATIONS. A GO AROUND WAS INITIATED AND WHEN THE THROTTLE'S WERE ADVANCED FULL FORWARD IN THE AIRCRAFT PITCHED UP EXCESSIVELY, YAWED TO THE LEFT, SETTLED BACK TO THE GROUNDS AND DEPARTING FROM CONTROLLED FLIGHT, SETTLING INTO THE DIRT OFF THE RUNWAY. THE AIRCRAFT SUSTAINED AIRFRAME, PROPELLER, AND LANDING GEAR DAMAGE. NO INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR24LA066](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR24LA066), Jan 8, 2024: Mooney M20E (N9338V), Byron, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s improper landing flare, which resulted in a hard, bounced landing and runway excursion. Contributing to the accident was the flight instructor’s delayed remedial action.

## Other reports on N9338V (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
