## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 01/28/2024, AT APPROXIMATELY 21:23Z, A HONDA AIRCRAFT COMPANY HA-420, MULTI-ENGINE TURBOJET AIRPLANE, HAD RECEIVED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE WHEN IT WAS INVOLVED IN A RUNWAY EXCURSION WHILE LANDING RUNWAY 36L AT THE ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (MCO), ORLANDO, FLORIDA. THE AIRCRAFT HAD EXITED THE LEFT SIDE OF RUNWAY 36L (LOCATED AT APPROXIMATELY 2700FT. FROM RUNWAY THRESHOLD) HITTING THE 9000FT. RUNWAY DISTANCE REMAINING SIGN (LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 3000FT. FROM RUNWAY THRESHOLD) BEFORE RETURNING ONTO RUNWAY 36L (LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 3610FT. FROM RUNWAY THRESHOLD). THE PILOT IN COMMAND (PIC) - AN AIRLINE TRANSPORT PILOT, THE SECOND IN COMMAND (SIC) - A COMMERCIAL PILOT, AND 2 PASSENGERS REPORTED NO INJURIES. THE AIRPLANE WAS OPERATED AS A TITLE 14 CODE OF FEDERAL REGULATIONS PART 135 FLIGHT.

DURING 18:53Z TO 21:53Z, MCO’S METARS REPORTED VISUAL METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS (VMC) WITH WINDS FROM THE WEST RANGING FROM 14-16 KTS. SUSTAINED WITH 22-24KTS. GUSTS. A PEAK WIND REPORTED AT 20:00Z 260 AT 27KTS.

AT APPROX. 21:20Z, MCO ATCT CLEARED THE AIRCRAFT TO LAND RWY 36L, ISSUED AN ADVISORY FOR BIRD ACTIVITY, AND REPORTED THE WIND AS 290 AT 21 KTS. AT 21:22:10Z, THE WIND WAS REPORTED 290 AT 19 KTS. GUSTING 24 KTS., IN RESPONSE TO A “WIND CHECK” (FROM AN UNIDENTIFIED AIRCRAFT). THE AIRCRAFT LANDED RWY 36L APPROX. 21:23Z.

THE PIC STATED, IN SUMMARY, THAT HE HAD TOUCHED DOWN ON CENTERLINE, APPLIED LEFT AILERON (FOR CROSSWIND), AND DEPLOYED THE SPEED BRAKE. THE AIRPLANE STARTED TO DRIFT LEFT AND THE PIC APPLIED RIGHT RUDDER TO MAINTAIN DIRECTIONAL CONTROL AND TO PREVENT FURTHER DRIFTING LEFT. THE PIC DOES NOT RECALL IF HE APPLIED BRAKES OR NOT IN THAT TIMEFRAME BEFORE THE AIRCRAFT LEFT THE PAVEMENT. THE PIC TRIED TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT WHILE IN THE GRASS AND WAS ABLE TURN RIGHT TOWARD THE RUNWAY. THE PIC STATED THAT HE STRUGGLED TO MAINTAIN CONTROL. THE PIC WAS EVENTUALLY ABLE TO STOP THE OSCILLATIONS AND COME TO A SAFE TAXI SPEED. THE PIC STATED THE AIRCRAFT FELT NORMAL, SO HE EXITED THE RUNWAY AT TAXIWAY ECHO AND STOPPED THE AIRCRAFT.

POST EVENT AIRCRAFT INSPECTION REVEALED PRIMARY FLIGHT CONTROLS, SPEED BRAKE, AND TRIMS, FUNCTIONAL DURING FULL RANGE CONTINUITY CHECK.

WHEN AND IF FURTHER INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE, THIS REPORT MAY BE UPDATED OR AMENDED ACCORDINGLY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

Probable cause: The failure of the pilot flying to maintain directional control after touchdown with wind gusts that exceeded the airplane’s crosswind limitation. Contributing to the accident were the flightcrew’s…
