## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AT APPROXIMATELY 1730 HOURS ON 1/31/2024 A PIPER PA-28 AIRCRAFT WAS FLYING IN THE PATTERN AT CONWAY MUNICIPAL AIRPORT (CXW) WITH A STUDENT PILOT AND FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR ONBOARD. WHILE DISCUSSING FUEL MANAGEMENT, THE INSTRUCTOR TOLD THE STUDENT TO SWITCH THE FUEL SELECTOR FROM THE RIGHT TANK TO THE LEFT. SHORTLY AFTER THE SWITCH, THE AIRCRAFT HAD AN UNRESPONSIVE THROTTLE. THE INSTRUCTOR TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT. UNABLE TO LAND AT THE AIRPORT DUE TO POSITION AND ALTITUDE, THE INSTRUCTOR LANDED THE AIRCRAFT IN AN ADJACENT PLOWED FIELD. THE NOSE GEAR BROKE AWAY FROM THE AIRCRAFT AND STRUCK THE RIGHT WING. THE PROPELLER STRUCK THE GROUND AND THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO A STOP, UPRIGHT WITH A NOSE DOWN ATTITUDE. BOTH PEOPLE ONBOARD EXITED THE AIRCRAFT WITHOUT INJURY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN24LA108](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN24LA108), Jan 31, 2024: Piper PA-28-180 (N2184T), Conway, AR, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot's improper movement of the fuel selector to the OFF position, which resulted in fuel starvation and a total loss of engine power.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
