## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR AND PILOT RECEIVING INSTRUCTION WERE COMPLETING A RECURRENCY FLIGHT MARCH 5, 2024. THEIR AIRCRAFT WAS CLEARED FOR A VFR TAKEOFF NORTHBOUND OUT OF KRNT. ON CLIMB OUT, APPROXIMATELY 4.5 NM FROM THE AIRPORT, THE AIRCRAFT INDICATED AN ENGINE FAILURE AT 2,500 MSL AND WAS APPROVED DIRECT TO RUNWAY 16 AT KRNT. THE INSTRUCTOR PILOT TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT FROM THE OTHER PILOT, RAN THE ENGINE FAILURE CHECKLIST, AND ATTEMPTED ONE ENGINE RESTART. THE ENGINE WOULD NOT RESTART, AND THE PIC IMMEDIATELY INDICATED HE WOULD NOT MAKE IT BACK TO THE AIRPORT. THE PIC STARTED A GLIDE TO MORE FAVORABLE TERRAIN AND DEPLOYED THE AIRCRAFT'S CIRRUS AIRFRAME PARACHUTE SYSTEM AROUND 1,500 MSL. THE AIRCRAFT CAME DOWN IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD GREEN BELT. CAUSE OF ENGINE FAILURE IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME DUE TO LACK OF INFORMATION BECAUSE THE NTSB HAS NOT DONE AN ENGINE TEARDOWN YET TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. NO CORRECTIVE ACTIONS NEEDED AT THIS TIME BASED ON FAA INVESTIGATION.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR24FA103](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR24FA103), Mar 6, 2024: Cirrus Design SR22T (N927CS), Bellevue, WA, incident, minor damage. Probable cause: A total loss of engine power due to a fatigue fracture of the crankshaft.

## Other reports on N927CS (1)

Matched to the same aircraft by N-number and date.

Airport and tower personnel reported the aircraft landed under VFR, but it was raining and the runway was wet. The aircraft touched down extremely FAR down…

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
