## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON MAY 5, 2024, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^, A TWIN AERO COMMANDER, DEPARTED MANASSAS REGIONAL AIRPORT (KHEF), MANASSAS VIRGINIA ENROUTE TO GEORGETOWN COUNTY AIRPORT (KGG), GEORGETOWN, SOUTH CAROLINA. TWO PILOTS WERE ON BOARD.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL (ATC) INSTRUCTED THE AIRCRAFT TO CLIMB AND MAINTAIN FLIGHT LEVEL 200. DURING THE CLIMB TO ALTITUDE, THE PILOT EXPERIENCED THE LOSS OF THE AUTOPILOT AND ADVISED ATC THAT THEY NEEDED TO CLIMB. THERE WAS NO FURTHER COMMUNICATION FROM THE PILOT.

AT APPROXIMATELY 8:50 AM, THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED IN PALMYRA, VA. THE AIRCRAFT WAS DESTROYED. WRECKAGE FOUND ON SCENE INDICATED AN INFLIGHT BREAKUP OCCURRED.

THE WEATHER IN THE VICINITY OF THE AIRCRAFT'S LOCATION AT ALTITUDE INDICATED MODERATE ICING CONDITIONS.

AFTER AN EXTENSIVE SEARCH, THE RIGHT ENGINE WAS NOT LOCATED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA24FA209](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA24FA209), May 5, 2024: Rockwell International 690A (N690BM), Palmyra, VA, destroyed, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot’s loss of control following an encounter with structural icing, which resulted in an inflight breakup of the airplane.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
