## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT DEPARTED KNYL AT 18:50 WITH A DESTINATION TO KHJO ARRIVING AT 19:10.

PRIOR TO THE PILOT DEPARTING KNJO TO RETURN BACK TO KNYL, THE PILOT UTILIZED THE FOREFLIGHT CHECKLIST, THAT HE HAD CREATED FOR THIS AIRCRAFT, TO CONDUCT THE PREFLIGHT PRIOR TO TAKE-OFF. PART OF THE PRE-FLIGHT INSPECTION INCLUDED VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE FUEL LEVELS, INCLUDING THE UTILIZATION OF A FUEL HAWK FUEL GAUGE. DURING VISUAL INSPECTION OF BOTH FUEL TANKS, PRIOR TO FLIGHT, THE LEFT TANK HAD 26 GALLONS. THE RIGHT TANK HAD 27 GALLONS. THIS GAVE THE PILOT A TOTAL OF 53 GALLONS FOR THE RETURN FLIGHT BACK TO KNYL. THE PILOT CONFIRMED THE DIGITAL FUEL QUANTITY GAUGE INSIDE THE COCKPIT READ APPROXIMATELY 53 GALLONS OF FUEL. AT APPROXIMATELY 5 TO 6 MILES FROM KNYL AND AT AN ALTITUDE OF 1200 FEET, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO RUN ROUGH. WHILE KEEPING THE AIRCRAFT LEVEL, THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO SPUTTER. AT THIS TIME THE PILOT WAS APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES FROM THE AIRPORT. HE DECIDED TO DECLARE AN EMERGENCY WITH THE YUMA ATCT. AT THIS TIME THE ENGINE WAS INTERMITTENTLY CUTTING OUT. THE PILOT DECIDED TO LAND THE AIRCRAFT ON A COUNTRY ROAD WHERE HE WAS ABLE TO SAFELY LAND THE AIRCRAFT. NO INJURIES TO THE PILOT OR DAMAGES TO PROPERTY OR THE AIRCRAFT.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
