## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

PILOT STATED HE WAS RETURNING FROM A LESSON AT UKIAH (UKI) AIRPORT. HAD APPROXIMATELY 20 GALLONS OF FUEL ON BOARD AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. AFTER PRACTICING LANDINGS, HE DECIDED TO HAVE ONE MORE LAP IN THE PATTERN. PILOT REPORTED THAT AS THE AIRPLANE BEGAN TO CLIMB, THE ENGINE WAS SUDENLY UNABLE TO PRODUCE FULL POWER (STILL RUNNING, JUST NOT MAKING POWER) AND HE BEGAN TO DESCEND. KNOWING THAT A TURN TO THE RUNWAY WAS UNMAKEABLE, HE DECIDED TO PERFORM A FORCED LANDING IN A FIELD DIRECTLY IN LINE WITH THE RUNWAY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR24LA154](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR24LA154), May 16, 2024: Cessna 172G (N4448L), Lakeport, CA, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s inadequate use of carburetor heat, which resulted in a total loss of engine power shortly after takeoff due to fuel starvation as a result of carburetor ice.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
