## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AFTER PERFORMING A POWER OFF 180 MANEUVER ON APPROACH, THE PRIVATE PILOT INDICATED THAT HE DID NOT BELIEVE THE LANDING WAS GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL. THE CFI THEN TOOK CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT TO DEMONSTRATING A POWER OFF 180 TO THE PRIVATE PILOT. THE CFI LANDED THE AIRCRAFT BUT DEPARTED THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RUNWAY INTO A DITCH STRIKING A VISUAL APPROACH SLOPE INDICATOR (VASI) LIGHT. DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT INCLUDED BUT WAS NOT LIMITED TO PROPELLER STRIKE, LEFT STABILATOR, LEFT DOOR, AND BUCKLING OF FUSELAGE NEAR STABILATOR MOUNTING POINT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN24LA381](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN24LA381), May 29, 2024: Cessna 177B (N177GW), Forest Lake, MN, substantial damage. Probable cause: The flight instructor’s delayed remedial action and failure to maintain aircraft control during the simulated forced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
