THE ACCIDENT WAS NOT REPORTED AT THE TIME OF OCCURRENCE. THE AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT WAS DISCOVERED MORE THAN 60 DAYS AFTER ITS OCCURRENCE VIA A HOTLINE COMPLAINT. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WAS ONE OF SEVERAL AIRCRAFT PARTICIPATING IN A CIVIL AIR PATROL (CAP) NATIONAL FLIGHT ACADEMY EVENT WHERE CAP CADETS RECEIVE FLIGHT INSTRUCTION AND GAIN FLIGHT HOURS TOWARDS THEIR PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED ON 06/23/2024 DURING A TRAINING FLIGHT. THE AIRCRAFT RECEIVED DAMAGE TO THE LOWER FIREWALL, FLOORBOARDS, FIREWALL/FLOORBOARD STIFFENER SUPPORTS, FLOORBOARD STRINGERS AND HORIZONTAL STABILIZER. THE CAP HAS A MAINTENANCE ISSUE REPORTING SYSTEM. AN ENTRY WAS MADE IN THE MAINTENANCE ISSUE REPORTING SYSTEM ON 06/23/2024 STATING THAT A PORPOISE EVENT STRUCK THE TAIL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND BROKE OFF THE TAIL TIEDOWN RING. DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE NATIONAL FLIGHT ACADEMY EVENT THE PERSON OPERATING THE AIRCRAFT AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT IS NOT KNOWN. ESTIMATED REPAIR FOR THE DAMAGE IS $40,000.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN24LA349](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN24LA349), Jun 23, 2024: Cessna 172R (N988CP), Hooper, NE, substantial damage. Probable cause: The solo student pilot’s unstable approach to the runway, which resulted in a hard, bounced landing

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
