## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

AIRMAN WAS DEPARTING TUNTUTULIAK, ALASKA IN A GIPPS-GA-8 AIRCRAFT WITH SIX PASSENGERS ONBOARD. THE AWOS WAS OUT OF SERVICE. THE VILLAGE AGENT ESTIMATED THE WINDS TO BE TWENTY KNOTS GUSTING TO TWENTY-FIVE KNOTS. WHEN THE AIRPLANE WAS ROTATING A LARGE GUST OF WIND HIT THE AIRPLANE FROM THE LEFT SIDE (CROSSWIND). THE ESTIMATED CROSSWIND WAS ABOVE THIRTY-FIVE KNOTS. THE RIGHT WINGTIP IMPACTED THE RUNWAY. THE PILOT WAS NOT AWARE THAT THE WINTIP HIT THE RUNWAY. THE AIRPLANE CONTINUED TO CLIMB AND PERFORMED AS IT WOULD UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES. THE AIRMAN DID NOT NOTICE ANY DAMAGE TO THE WINGTIP AND CONTINUED THE FLIGHT BACK TO BETHEL, ALASKA. THE FLIGHT WAS APPROXIMATELY 45 MILES. THE DAMAGE WAS NOTICED AFTER THE AIRPLANE LANDED IN BETHEL AND THE NTSB WAS NOTIFIED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC24LA055](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC24LA055), Jun 26, 2024: Gippsland GA-8 (N13AV), Tuntutuliak, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during takeoff after an encounter with a gusting wind, which resulted in a wing strike.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
