## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON JULY 07, 2024, AT APPROXIMATELY 2106 EASTERN STANDARD TIME (EST), A 1958 CESSNA 182 WAS DESTROYED AS IT IMPACTED THE SIDE OF A MOUNTAIN LOCATED IN RUTHERFORDTON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA.

ADSB DATA REVEALED THE AIRCRAFT HAD DEPARTED FROM THE JOHNSON CITY AIRPORT (0A4) AT 2029 EST ENROUTE TO THE RUTHERFORDTON COUNTY AIRPORT (KFQD). ADSB DATA SHOWS THAT THE AIRCRAFT WAS LOCATED NORTH OF NEBO, NORTH CAROLINA ON A HEADING OF 191 DEGREES AND A SPEED OF 134 KTS UNTIL 2054 EST. AT THAT TIME, THE AIRCRAFT COMPLETED TWO, 360-DEGREE RIGHT HAND TURNS WHILE DESCENDING FROM AN ALTITUDE OF 6375 FT TO 5175 FT, THEN CONTINUED A SOUTHERNLY COURSE ON A HEADING OF 168 DEGREES AND A GROUND SPEED OF 118 KTS. ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ FLEW LESS THAN 1 NM BEFORE IT MADE ANOTHER 360-DEGREE RIGHT TURN AND A DECENT DOWN TO 4050 FT WHICH PLACED THE AIRCRAFT JUST SOUTH OF NEBO, NORTH CAROLINA AT 2057 EST. N2198G THEN CONTINUED SOUTH BOUND ON A COURSE OF 185 DEGREES AND A GROUND SPEED OF 121 KTS IN A CONTINUING DECENT DOWN TO 2100 FEET.

AS ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ PROCEEDED SOUTH-BOUND, THERE IS A THREE-MINUTE PERIOD FROM 2103:02 EST TO 2105:42 EST WITH NO ADSB DATA. WITH ADSB TRACKING REESTABLISHED AT 2105:43, THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO CLIMB AS IT STARTED A RIGHT 360-DEGREE TURN AND THEN THE AIRCRAFT QUICKLY DESCENDED WHILE IN THAT SAME RIGHT 360-DEGREE TURN WITH AN ALTIMETER READING OF 2125 FT. AT 2106 EST, THE ADSB FINAL DATA POINT SHOWS THE AIRCRAFT WITH A LOCATION OF LAT 35.529/ LONG -81.915, ALTITUDE OF 2250 FEET, SPEED 136 KTS AND A HEADING OF 100 DEGREES. THE ADSB FINAL DATA POINT CORRELATES TO THE AIRCRAFT WRECKAGE GPS POINT WHERE IT IMPACTED THE NORTH SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN LOCATED AT LAT 35.529400 / LONG -81.915802, APPROXIMATELY 12 MILES NORTH OF KFQD.

THE IMPACT INDICATED A HIGH-SPEED, LOW ANGLE ENTRY AND ALL MAJOR AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES, ENGINE, AND PROPELLER WERE FOUND AT THE CRASH SITE. KFQD WEATHER AT 2045 EST, REPORTED VISIBILITY OF 4-5 MILES, RAIN, AND MULTIPLE BROKEN/SCATTERED CLOUD LAYERS AT 700 FT, 2700 FT, AND 12000 FT.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA24FA294](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA24FA294), Jul 8, 2024: Cessna 182 (N2198G), Rutherfordton, NC, substantial damage, 3 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain clearance from clouds, resulting in controlled flight into terrain due to mountain obscuration.
