## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE PILOT WAS DEPARTING FROM AN UNIMPROVED STRIP NEAR THE WOOD RIVER IN ALASKA NEAR VIRGINIA CREEK. THE WEATHER WAS VFR WITH NO CEILINGS AND 10 MILES VISIBILITY. THE WIND WAS VARIABLE WITH OCCASIONAL GUSTS. PIC CHOSE A WESTBOUND DEPARTURE TOWARDS THE RIVER. DURING THE TAKEOFF ROLL, THE PIC FAILED TO MAINTAIN CENTERLINE DUE TO A GUST OF WIND JUST AS THE TAIL LIFTED CAUSING THE LEFT WING TO CONTACT SOME SMALL TREES. THE AIRCRAFT CAME TO REST JUST CLEAR OF THE STRIP.

PIC/PASSENGER EXITED THE AIRCRAFT SAFELY AND WERE UNHARMED. THEY DOCUMENTED THE SCENE WITH PICTURES THEN REMOVED VEGETATION SO THEY COULD REMOVE CAMPING GEAR.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ANC24LA078](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ANC24LA078), Aug 15, 2024: Cessna 170B (N2524D), Healy, AK, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during takeoff, in gusty wind conditions, resulting in a loss of control and a collision with trees.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
