## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

DURING A CROSS COUNTRY FLIGHT, THE PIC STARTED DESCENDING TO LAND. APPROXIMATELY 5 MILES FROM THE AIRPORT THE ENGINE LOST POWER AND THE PIC PERFORMED AN EMERGENCY LANDING IN A CORN FIELD. DAMAGE TO THE AIRCRAFT INCLUDED BUT WAS NOT LIMITED TO FLOATS, BROKEN ENGINE MOUNT, PROPELLER STRIKE, BENT TUBES AND HOLES IN FUSELAGE, AND RIGHT WING. POST ACCIDENT INSPECTION OF THE AIRCRAFT REVEALED NO EVIDENCE OF ANY PREIMPACT MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS OR FAILURES THAT WOULD HAVE PRECLUDED NORMAL OPERATION. TEMP OF 26 C AND DEW POINT OF 16 C WAS REPORTED AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT. CARBURETOR ICING PROBABILITY CHART SHOWS MODERATE ICING AT CRUISE POWER AND SERIOUS ICING AT DESCENT POWER UNDER THESE CONDITIONS. CARBURETOR HEAT WAS FOUND IN THE OFF POSITION. CONTINUITY WAS CONFIRMED FROM THE CONTROL TO THE CARB HEAT BOX. THE FLAP IN THE BOX WOULD NOT MOVE DUE TO IMPACT DAMAGE. CARB HEAT BOX WAS INSPECTED USING A BORESCOPE, THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF RUBBING INTERNALLY.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN24LA356](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN24LA356), Sep 12, 2024: Piper PA-12 (N7878M), Cumberland, WI, substantial damage. Probable cause: The total loss of engine power due to carburetor icing and the pilot’s delayed use carburetor heat in weather conditions conducive to carburetor icing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
