## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ACCIDENT AIRCRAFT NO.1 (AA1) WAS CONDUCTING PATTERN WORK ON RWY 34 AT KMEV, UTILIZING A LEFT TRAFFIC PATTERN. ACCIDENT AIRCRAFT NO.2 (AA2) WAS INBOUND FROM THE WEST FOR A FULL STOP LANDING ON RWY 34. WHILE ROLLING FROM CROSSWIND ONTO A LEFT DOWNWIND LEG, AA1 HEARD AA2 MAKE A CTAF CALL THAT HE WAS CONDUCTING A 45-DEGREE ENTRY TO THE LEFT DOWNWIND FOR RWY 34. THE PILOTS IN AA1 IMMEDIATELY BEGAN A VISUAL SCAN FOR AA2 WHILE CROSS CHECKING THEIR ADS-B DISPLAY. AA1 BEGAN A CTAF TRANSMISSION TO RELAY THEIR POSITION IN THE PATTERN WHICH WAS INTERRUPTED WHEN AA2 COLLIDED WITH AA1. THE NOSE OF AA1 TORE AWAY THE ENTIRE TAIL SECTION OF AA2, CAUSING THE AIRCRAFT TO BURST INTO FLAMES AND SPIRAL STEEPLY TO THE GROUND. ONE OF THE PROPELLER BLADES OF AA1 WAS BROKEN OFF CAUSING IMMEDIATE, SEVERE VIBRATIONS. BELIEVING THAT THEY WERE EXPERIENCING A CATOSTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE, THE PILOTS OF AA1 SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE AND WERE ABLE TO EXECUTE AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON RWY 12. BOTH PILOTS OF AA1 STATED THAT THEY NEVER SAW AA2 AND THAT THEY DID NOT REALIZE THEY HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN A MID-AIR COLLISION UNTIL AFTER THEY HAD LANDED.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR24FA304](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR24FA304), Sep 16, 2024: Globe Swift GC-1B (N78074), Minden, NV, substantial damage, 1 fatal. Probable cause: The failure of the pilots of both airplanes to see and avoid the other airplane while operating in the airport traffic pattern, which resulted in a midair collision.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
