## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

WHILE CONDUCTING INSTRUCTION TO A STUDENT PILOT THE INSTRUCTOR WAS ALLOWING THE STUDENT TO ATTEMPT ONE OF THEIR FIRST LANDINGS. THE INSTRUCTOR WAS COVERING THE CONTROLS AND THE STUDENT CAME IN A LITTLE TO STEEP AND BOUNCED OF THE NOSE WHEEL AND THEN TOUCHED THE MAINS. THE INSTRUCTOR TOOK CONTROLS AND CONDUCTED A GO AROUND. THEY COMPLETED A SECOND TRIP IN THE PATTERN AND LANDED THE INCIDENT WAS REPORTED AS A TAIL STRIKE AND THAT WAS THE EXTENT OF IT. HOWEVER AFTER FURTHER INSPECTION IT WAS FOUND THAT THE AIRCRAFT HAD SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE WHICH BY THE NTSB830 WAS DEEMED AN ACCIDENT. BOTH THE PILOT AND THE STUDENT WALKED AWAY WITH NO INJURIES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN24LA379](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN24LA379), Sep 24, 2024: Textron 172S (N281EA), Janesville, WI, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s improper flare and the flight instructor’s delayed remedial action that resulted in a hard, bounced landing.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
