## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON AUGUST 7, 2025, APPROXIMATELY 11:06 CST, A HUGHES (MD HELICOPTERS) 369D HELICOPTER WAS DESTROYED AFTER THE TAIL OF THE HELICOPTER STRUCK A GUIDE WIRE, WHICH PARTIALLY SEPARATED THE TAILBOOM FROM THE AIRFRAME. THE HELICOPTER THEN SPUN IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AND THE COCKPIT HIT THE POWER LINE CAUSING SPARKS. THE HELICOPTER FELL ONTO A BARGE DECK BELOW THEM AND BURST INTO FLAMES.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB CEN25FA307](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/CEN25FA307), Aug 7, 2025: Hughes 369D (N173AL), West Alton, MO, destroyed, 2 fatal. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain helicopter clearance from the powerline during the powerline maintenance operation for reasons that could not be determined.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
