## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

THE STUDENT PILOT TYPICALLY CONDUCTED TRAINING FLIGHTS IN THE AFTERNOON AND WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH LOCAL PROCEDURES REGARDING THE PARKING BRAKE SYSTEM. FLIGHT SCHOOL PERSONNEL REPORTED THAT THE PARKING BRAKE SHOULD BE RELEASED AND RESET PRIOR TO USE TO ENSURE ADEQUATE BRAKE PRESSURE. THE PARKING BRAKE HAD REPORTEDLY BEEN LEFT SET OVERNIGHT, RESULTING IN INSUFFICIENT BRAKE PRESSURE THE FOLLOWING MORNING.

WHEN THE STUDENT PILOT STARTED THE ENGINE, THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN MOVING DESPITE BRAKE APPLICATION. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED FORWARD AND SUBSEQUENTLY STRUCK AT LEAST TWO PARKED VEHICLES.

FOLLOWING THE EVENT, THE FLIGHT SCHOOL MET WITH THE STUDENT PILOT AND FLIGHT INSTRUCTOR, SCHEDULED ADDITIONAL TRAINING, AND REVISED LOCAL PROCEDURES TO REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF A SIMILAR OCCURRENCE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB WPR26LA092](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/WPR26LA092), Jan 21, 2026: Piper PA-28-181 (N505AF), Scottsdale, AZ, substantial damage. Probable cause: The student pilot’s failure to properly adjust their seat and failure to set the parking brake before engine start, which resulted in a collision with parked vehicles.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
