## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

STUDENT DEPARTED KAWO AFTER COMPLETION OF FLIGHT REVIEW GROUND. CFI (PIC) OBSERVED STUDENT CORRECTLY USE A CHECKLIST AND VERIFY FUNCTION OF THE GEAR INDICATOR LIGHTS BEFORE TAKEOFF. PIC & STUDENT COMPLETED VFR AIRWORK INVOLVING SLOW FLIGHT/STALLS AND RETURNED TO THE AIRPORT TO PERFORM NORMAL AND PERFORMANCE TAKEOFFS/LANDINGS. STUDENT WAS THEN GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS FROM CFI (PIC) TO COMPLETE A NORMAL LANDING WITH A TOUCH AND GO AND RIGHT TRAFFIC. CFI (PIC) OBSERVED STUDENT CORRECTLY ADD FLAPS AND GEAR, AND BACKUP THE CONFIGURATION CHANGES WITH A VERBAL CHECK AND VISUAL VERIFICATION OF THE GEAR INDICATION LIGHTS. THE FIRST LANDING WAS UNEVENTFUL BUT OVERLY FIRM. ON TAKEOFF, CFI (PIC) OBSERVED STUDENT SELECT GEAR UP. CFI (PIC) NOTICED THAT THE STUDENT FORGOT TO RETRACT FLAPS AND PROMPTED HIM TO DO SO. CFI (PIC) ASKED THE STUDENT FOR A SECOND NORMAL LANDING, AND WHILE IN THE PATTERN, THEY DISCUSSED THE REASON FOR THE FIRM LANDING AND HOW THE STUDENT COULD FIX IT PRIOR TO THE SECOND LANDING A CLOSER-IN BASE LEG AND A STEEPER APPROACH. WHILE THE CFI (PIC) WAS DISCUSSING THE CHANGES TO THE STUDENTS PATTERN, THE CFI (PIC) WATCHED THE STUDENT CORRECTLY ADDED FLAPS BUT MISSED THAT THE STUDENT DIDN’T SELECT GEAR DOWN. CFI (PIC) WAS DISTRACTED AND NEGLECTED TO ADEQUATELY POSITIVELY CHECK LANDING CONFIGURATION.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
