## Narrative

As the FAA filed it, in capitals; the FAA replaces private details with ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^.

ON 08/04/2026 AT 1350 EST ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ ABORTED A TAKEOFF AT EUGENE F. KRANZ TOLEDO EXPRESS AIRPORT (TOL) LOCATED IN SWANTON. THE AIRMAN STATED THE PURPOSE OF THE FLIGHT WAS TO PRACTICE AEROBATIC MANEUVERS FOR AN UPCOMING AEROBATIC COMPETITION. AFTER BEING CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF. THE AIRMAN LINED UP ON RUNWAY 25, APPLIED POWER AND AT APPROXIMATELY 10 TO 15 KNOTS THE CANOPY SWUNG OPEN AND CONTACTED THE RIGHT WING CAUSING IT TO SHATTER. THE AIRMAN ABORTED THE TAKEOFF AND NOTIFIED ATC. THE AIRMAN STATED THAT SOMETIMES THE LOCKING MECHANISM DOES NOT PROPERLY ENGAGE. THE LATCH LOOKS LIKE IT IS LOCKED WHEN IN FACT, THE CANOPY IS NOT LATCHED AND LOCKED PROPERLY. THE AIRMAN SAID MOST PILOTS OF THIS AIRCRAFT WILL PUSH UP ON THE CANOPY AFTER THE CANOPY IS LOCKED, THIS ENSURES THE CANOPY IS SECURE. THE AIRMAN SAID HE DOES NOT REMEMBER PUSHING UP ON THE CANOPY BEFORE TAKEOFF. THE AIRMAN SAID IF HE WOULD HAVE PUSHED UP ON THE CANOPY AND HE WOULD HAVE SEEN THE CANOPY WAS NOT LATCHED. THE AIRMAN IS ASSUMING HE FORGOT TO PUSH UP ON THE CANOPY BEFORE THE ATTEMPTED DEPARTURE.

## The NTSB's investigation of this event (1)

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

- [NTSB ERA26LA292](https://openairdocs.org/ntsb/ERA26LA292), Aug 4, 2026: Extra Flugzeugproduktions-Und EA 300/LT (N330SB), Whitehouse, OH, substantial damage. Probable cause: The pilot’s failure to ensure the canopy was properly locked before flight, which resulted in the canopy opening during takeoff.

From the FAA Accident/Incident Data System. Reports are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model. For accidents, the NTSB's own investigation is the fuller record.
